About Bend Tables - PTC.
The tables below show bend radii and minimum bend sizes for materials and tooling combinations stocked by Protocase. We go beyond the general rules of sheet metal bending, as our customers want tight bend radii for sheet metal parts. It is possible to choose other bends if you require, but additional lead time and tooling charges may apply.

When bends are made smaller than the required min. radius, metal will crack at the outside heel of the bend. The min. radius of a bend is determined by the hardness and thickness of the metal.

As Alibre Design software is what I use, the image shows the the sheet metal parameter set up for this application. In this case, the part is to be made from 2mm thick.

The bend allowance and bend deduction are two measures that relate the bent length of a piece of sheet metal to the flat length. The bend allowance describes the length of the neutral axis between the bend lines, or in other words, the arc length of the bend. Therefore, the bend allowance added to the flange lengths is equal to the total flat. For example, the conversion equation, L = 2 T R-A, makes adjustments to the bend allowance values as shown in the example below. When the specified thickness and bend radius values are within the table data range but not displayed in the table, the corresponding bend allowance is calculated by interpolation of the table bend allowance.

Mar 28, 2021 Sheet metal bending is an operation that involves using forces to change the shape of a sheet. This is done to achieve the desired form or shape needed for a manufacturing process. The external force used alters only the external features of the sheet. However, parameters of the one type of sheet metal such as length and thickness remain the. In our example below a part with flange lengths of 2 and 3 with an inside radius of.250 at 90 will have leg lengths of 1.625 and 2.625 respectively. When we calculate the Bend Allowance we find that it equals.457. In order to develop the flat pattern we add.457 to 1.625 and 2.625 to arrive at 4.707.

Many CAD programs, however, also work out bend allowances automatically by using K-factor calculations. Or Y-factor in the case of Pro-E where Y-factor = K-factor / 2. Bend allowances are calculated using a K-factor as follows: BA=R KT A/180 where: BA = bend allowance R = inside bend radius K = K factor, which is t / T T = material.
Sheet Metal Bending: Basics, Allowance, and Tips.
Apr 24, 2017 When designing a sheet metal part which is folded you need to understand what happens when a flat sheet of metal is fabricated or folded. To calculate the actual pattern dimensions you can use the bend allowance or bend deduction method. When the piece of sheet metal is put through the cold forming process of bending, the metal on the outside of the bend is often stretched while the inside is. Actual dimensions can only be found by making the bend and measuring the results. The above formula is for right angle bends only. For gaging, remember to use only one leg and one-half of the bend allowance to approximate the distance. Bend Allowance Overview SheetMetalD Page 12 of 12 6. Bend deduction table Bend deduction tables are used to calculate flat pattern layouts. The tables are based on the Bend Deduction BD formula, which calculates the flat line length to produce a specific bend angle. BD = 2 X OSSB - BA. Jun 01, 2017 Understanding the Bend Allowance and consequently the Bend Deduction of a part is a crucial first step to understanding how sheet metal parts are fabricated. When the sheet metal is put through the process of bending the metal around the bend is deformed and stretched. As this happens you gain a small amount of total length in your part. BEND ALLOWANCE: Sheet metal stretches minutely as it is being formed. The greater the inside bend radius is the less the stretching. Also material hardness or elasticity has a lot to do with how much it stretches. Therefore bend allowance is that dimensional adjustment required to allow for the forming of sheet metal. BEND ALLOWANCE For 90 Degree Angles To get bend allowance for other angles: Divide these by 90 then multiply by desired angle. EXAMPLE: B.A. for.048 mat with.062 B.R. at 30 degrees.131/90=.0014555 x 30 =.044 B.A. MATERIAL THICKNESS.
